Life & Work
Like the beam of a spotlight, the photographs direct the viewer's attention and push him or her into a whirlpool of a wide variety of emotions. The artworks of Raffaele Horstmann live from contrasts and imbalance. Beauty is opposed to the imperfect, light to darkness and silence to the great noise of our time. The artist is thematically oriented to the current social, political or personal change and the repression of the present. He specifically takes up perspectives that reshape the usual views of the world.
In doing so, Horstmann works in parallel on different series of works that constantly grow and change in their process. The visually very divergent ways of working thereby also reflect the experiences of a person who has grown up in different cultures and value structures due to his German and Italian roots. The concepts of his staged photography are a reminder of respect and mindfulness - towards the world, its people and their freedom.
Raffaele Horstmann was born in 1989 in Frechen, Germany. In 2012 he finished his photography studies and has been working as a freelance artist since 2011. His works have been shown in more than 35 solo and group exhibitions. He regularly publishes extensive photo books to his series - which are completely self-published.
